Not the Shirakawa Most People Know

When many people hear the name Shirakawa, they think of Shirakawa-go (白川郷), the famous UNESCO World Heritage village.

Satoyama is based instead in Shirakawa-chō (白川町), a small rural town in the southern mountains of Gifu Prefecture.

While less well known internationally, Shirakawa-chō offers something different: an opportunity to experience everyday life in a living rural community rather than simply visit a destination.

Unlike places that welcome millions of visitors each year, there are no crowded streets, long queues, or carefully curated tourist experiences.

What you'll find instead are working farms, forested mountains, local workshops, and communities where traditions remain woven into everyday life. Here, visitors are not simply observers, they have the opportunity to engage with the people, places, and culture that shape the community.

For us, that is precisely what makes this place special.

A Community Facing Change

Like many rural communities across Japan, Shirakawa-cho is navigating population decline and an aging demographic. As fewer people remain to carry traditions, skills, and local knowledge forward, preserving rural culture becomes increasingly important.

Satoyama aims to be part of that effort by creating meaningful connections between local residents and participants from around the world. Through language learning, cultural exchange, and community participation, the program seeks to support local businesses and hosts, contribute to the local economy, and help strengthen the long-term vitality of the community.
